Trabuco Canyon Trail
Getting There:
Follow the same directions as getting to Holy Jim Canyon Trail.
The Ride:
After parking, ride another 3/4 mile further down the dirt road you came in on. After passing a series of houses you will come to a gate. Ride along the bottom section of the Trabuco Canyon Trail for about 1.8 miles. This is a fun, technical section with lots of rocks and some stream crossings you will probably have to hike through. At this point look to your right past the fallen trees and you will see a trail heading up the mountain. DO NOT TAKE THE WEST HORSE THIEF TRAIL TO THE LEFT. Your climb up this single track can become frustrating at times as you trek over various sections of loose rock which makes 100 feet seem like 1 mile. Bear with it though. After about 1 mile the trail clears and you climb some very fun and shady sections. Almost three miles from the lower junction you will reach the Main Divide. At this point you can ride back down this very fun trail which traverses under trees grown across the trail. This ride is not recommended for rookies. It will take a fairly strong rider about 2 hours.
For added adventure. Turn left on the Main Divide and within 3 miles of roller coaster riding you will come to West Horse thief Trail. Be careful. The slate rock can make it feel like you are skiing sometimes rather than riding. When you get back to the junction that you turned right to go up Trabuco Canyon Trail, keep heading down to you car. This will add another 45 minutes to your ride.
For even more added adventure. At the top of Trabuco Canyon Trail turn left and ride pass West Horse Thief until you reach the top of Holy Jim Canyon Trail approximately 5 miles down the Main Divide. Ride down Holy Jim Canyon Trail back to your car. On your way home be sure to stop at Cook's Corner for a cold one. You deserve it.
